2008 NAMTC Leadership Summit:

Education 2.0 and Beyond!

by Geoff Craven, Central Susquehanna IU

The 2008 Leadership Summit is designed for educational and technology leaders in regional service agencies.  As leaders, we need to keep abreast of emerging technologies and provide the guidance and leadership for our schools.  Personal technology is rapidly changing…cell phones have become media players and media players have become cell phones.  The 3D and virtual reality envelopes continue to be pushed.  Smart phones keep us connected via email and Instant Messaging.  Now, compare this access to your schools’ technology environments!

At the Summit, we’ll learn about newly emerging technologies, trends and policies.  Take advantage of the enormous talent, knowledge and resources at the Summit to provide the leadership needed to take our schools to “Education 2.0 and Beyond!”

If you haven’t registered for the Summit, you can do so at www.NAMTC.org.  The Summit will be held at the Syracuse (NY) Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center, April 22-25, 2008.

New Electronic Discovery Rules Specify New Duties for School Districts

by Dorothy M. Bollinger, Esquire. Fox Rothschild LLP
In past years, litigators and judges have addressed electronic discovery concerns through rules designed for paper discovery disputes.  In response to this problem, the Supreme Court of the United States approved amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure which took effect on December 1, 2006, thereby recognizing the importance of electronic data, and addressing the growing expense of responding to e-discovery... There is an opportunity to engage students like never before.  Multimedia resources, such as interactive online games, video clips, podcasts and data sets, allow you to address a range of learning styles and meet the needs of every student.  Technology allows us to teach and learn in ways that were never possible before and enables efficiency in both learning and teaching.  Technology has become an essential life-long learning... PAIUnet--Making a Difference

by John Branson, Chester County IU
The Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units (PAIU) is in the process of  building a statewide education network connecting schools and Intermediate Units throughout the Commonwealth.  This represents the culmination of an effort begun in 2002 by the executive directors of all 29 Intermediate Units.  That dream took an important step towards becoming a reality last year when the Intermediate Units received a $54,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to plan the network.  The grant was part of the E-Fund program, a six-year initiative designed to provide broadband connectivity for every public school in... CoSN K-12 School Network Conference:

Scaffolding 21st Century Learning with Technology

by Lori Bruzek, Cedar Rapids Community Schools
"What happens if learning is compulsory and school attendance is optional?" "Social networking has a place in education?"  These were just two questions that arose during CoSN's Visionary Leadership conference.  They provide an inkling of how paradigms and expectations within the education landscape are changing.  The extension of "anytime, anywhere learning" with the proliferation of internet access and connectivity has generated new opportunities for actively participating in a wide variety of learning communities. Classrooms and careers are no longer strictly bounded by time schedules and physical location. Dan Pink, author of A Whole New Mind shared his insight on an anticipated evolution of careers. He notes that accountants and lawyers see clients... Full Article >>

CoSN K-12 School Network Conference:

International Symposium

by Brian Unruh, AEA 267
My name is Brian Unruh, and I was lucky enough to be able to attend the CoSN K-12 School Network Conference, Visionary Leadership: Scaffolding 21st Century Learning with Technology in Washington D.C. from March 9-12, 2008.  This conference was different from other conferences that I had been to in the past for two reasons.  One reason is that it brought in educational technology leaders throughout the world, and the other is that the focus was on the learning and not the... Vermont High School Integrates Digital Videos Into the Science Classroom

by Liese Brown, Visual Learning Company
Technology in the classroom is rapidly advancing, creating new and exciting opportunities to meet the varying learning styles and needs of students.  It can be challenging for schools to keep up with the latest technological advances, but middle school science teachers at Otter Valley (OVUHS) in Brandon, VT are able to do so through the use of digital videos and video iPods.  In 2007, Visual Learning Company (VLC), Vermont-based producers of educational elementary and middle school videos for the science classroom, donated their middle school Digital Science Video Library to Otter Valley, allowing teachers to integrate digital video technology into the classroom. ...
