by Geoff Craven, NAMTC President, Central Susquehanna IU #16 It’s hard to believe how quickly time flies! By the time you read this, some of you may be preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends, or may be enroute to the NAMTC Conference in Phoenix. As the holidays and the New Year are rapidly approaching, let’s take a look back on 2008.
If one key word could be used to describe 2008, it would be CHANGE. While CHANGE has been overused throughout the presidential election, it certainly reflects the turmoil we are facing in education. A few months ago, the price of gas was over $4/gallon and schools were looking at ways to reduce costs including video field trips, 4 day weeks, and alternative energy sources. Recently, the price of gas has plummeted to its lowest level in years – and district interest in these solutions, many of which require technology, have waned.
Meanwhile, the federal government bailout of financial institutions, plummeting stock market and the rise of unemployment have reduced earnings and revenues for states and school districts. Once again, as districts begin to prepare their budgets for 2009-2010, we... Full Article >> |

Digital Literacy:
A Key 21st Century Skill
|
|
| |
by Diane Zoellmer, Muskegon ISD One of the more challenging aspects regarding Digital Literacy is defining it. To add to the confusion, such terms as digital literacy, tech literacy, and information literacy are used interchangeably. Since technology is rapidly evolving, digital literacy is dynamic, and we must continually redefine it. While we can’t all agree on what digital literacy means, what is clear is that the proliferation of technology and internet access in our schools has not only changed our definitions but also dramatically increased the need to ensure that all of our students are technologically literate.
Traditional literacy refers to the ability to... Full Article >> |
